Regulus The Great
My last fish, Umbra, died a couple days ago. I’ll spare you from a long sappy post and will simply note that I loathe mosquitoes. I went to bury him and they commenced an aerial attack on me, so I didn’t get much time to say goodbye. I had thought he’d be my last one for awhile, because I wasn’t planning on getting anymore and quite frankly when they die it’s very heartbreaking. But mom came home from work yesterday to reveal, dun dun dun, a new fish for me. I grimaced at first, because even though most of my bettas last at least a year, I wasn’t quite over Umbra and I didn’t want to have to care for anymore living creatures when Chip is already so annoyingly persistent with attention. And of course dad didn’t make it any better when he asked mom what happened to my last fish, thinking I couldn’t hear him, “She forget to feed it?” He’s always thinking the worst of me, it seems.
But whatever. The fish is growing on me despite my initial dislike. He’s a very small, very colorful crowntail, and he’s mostly blue with scales that shine green, but he also has red and a bit of purple if I’m not mistaken. His eyes are also half icy blue and half dark blue, so he really does look rather cool. I’m not positive on his name yet, but I think I’ll call him Regulus, which means “little prince” and goes along nicely with my current Harry Potter addiction. Originally I was going to call him “Reginold” but I think of ruddy, chubby men when I encounter that name, so it was - no, just no. I’d have called him Severus, but I’d rather save that for a black, green and purple one. Anyway, yeah. Regulus seems to be getting along nicely in his new home, and mom says that he’s very lucky because several of the other fish were still floating dead in the water when she was in the store and that he was one of the few that were still flapping their fins along as if to say “YAY, I’M ALIVE!!!” We think he’s very young, especially since he doesn’t flare his gills yet, though that may just be because he’s not very dominant.
