The Sims 2

I offered to be mom’s Sims 2 buddy when she mentioned she wished she had someone to play with. It was the least I could do when she spent a hundred something dollars to buy a Nintendo DS and Pokémon Pearl to be my Poké pal, and I did originally enjoy the Sims. The thing that originally turned me off is that, eventually, all the perfection gets boring; you can only play so many versions of the story with the perfect family in their perfect house with their perfect jobs and their perfect skills. It’s not difficult to attain all this with a few hours of game time, but then I’m one of those people who, upon starting a game, cannot put it down until its ass is battered in every way possible. The original Sims games had a formula that was easy to discover and manipulate to “win.”

The Sims 2 has been out for years now, and mom has faithfully compiled the expansion packs over time. A lot of it is familiar because there are similar expansion packs for both the original and the new version, and a lot of it is funner now because I’ve picked some rather unconventional (for me) standards for my Sim. Instead of picking a knowledge aspiration, I went with pleasure. So now, instead of focusing on maxing out my Sim’s skills, I’m focusing on how many times she jumps on the couch and watches TV. Instead of making her a semi-antisocial neat freak she is as active, kind and sloppy as she can be. Let me tell you, I was shocked when she peed in the shower. She actually has five skill points in cleaning now after all the mopping I have her do! I’m also just focusing on doing what she wants; if she’d rather go on a date than strive for a promotion, fine with me.

One thing I do have a problem with is their bodies. They look inhumanly, abnormally thin, and while it does look kind of nice, it also makes my stomach churn. I am enjoying my game play, but I would love it if the game had some more body types besides overweight and emaciated. More important is distancing myself from the fact that it is basically a distorted reality where people are generally prettier and more successful without a college education; what an appeal, wish I lived there!

Insert Maniacal Laughter Here

So, I’ve been fairly busy lately and getting down to serious business with my room. It was a complete disaster until mom came to me one day and offered to help me out by buying things to help organize it and stuff. If you looked at my room now compared to how it was before I think your jaw might just drop. It feels very open and clean now, an atmosphere the likes of which my room hasn’t quite seen since it was first built. I consider it done, though mom thinks it could do with some dusting and that the drawing table could be clearer. Whatever - it’s already ten times better than it was!

Other than that, I have a copy of Pokémon Leaf Green. At first the tiny graphics were killing me because I was so used to Diamond, but I’m getting used to it now that I’ve actually started playing it, whereas before I was just grabbing the starters for Diamond’s Pal Park. I’m having a lot of fun with it and it feels like I never left Red at all. I have decided that I will be giving every Pokémon I get in that game a nickname. Why don’t you try and guess who Hameln, Silver, Aero and Quinn are? A hint: I’m in Pewter City and I just beat Brock, so the Pokémon caught are all from the areas leading up to Pewter.

Oh, and I bought yet another fish on my recent shopping trip. His name is Midnight and he’s a dark blue violet crowntail with black and red fins. I feel guilty about it since anyone would’ve grabbed Midnight if they spotted him as opposed to one of the fish with a less attractive appearance. He and Regulus like flaring their gills at one another (yes, Regulus is finally doing it) and they’re both settled in their homes quite nicely. Yay fishies!

Deathly Hallows

I’ve been spending most of my time away from the computer diving into the Harry Potter books lately. I hadn’t really picked one up since July 21st, 2007 - the day Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows took the world by storm. I read it during that day so as to not be spoiled by other people, though I remember being so tempted to check out the Wikipedia article and see the spoilers. I think I rushed through the book when I was reading it because I wanted to read the final battle against Voldemort so badly. It’s also kind of hilarious, because my English teachers always used to tell us to ask questions while we read, and I thought it was kind of stupid to say something like that at the time; but now I ask myself things about the book as I read on.

At any rate, I’m amused that my obsession’s come back. I started reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix one night while it was on HBO because everything seemed very out of place in the movie and I felt ashamed that I couldn’t remember if several things were in the book or not. So I sat down and read it, and now I’m stuck in the books until the end of Deathly Hallows. I didn’t used to like J.K. Rowling’s writing style, finding it boring and slowing down the series even further, and often criticized it amongst friends, but as I reread it my opinion has changed: she’s actually very good. Granted I’m at the end of the series, so of course her style will have improved over the years, but the only thing that ever irks me is her dialogue construction. It’s nearly all he said, she said.

Right now I’m at the part where they’ve broken into Gringotts, gotten the Hufflepuff cup and jumped off the dragon into the water. It’s funny how they’ve only defeated one Horcrux by page 500, and then the end is totally rushed. XD And I still can’t help but be completely angry at Ron. Ron’s never stood out to me as a character - good for comic relief and all, but when he abandons Harry and Hermione I still agree with Harry: “Did you think you’d be home to Mummy in time for Christmas?”

In other news, it’s raining constantly here. This is the sixth day in the row it’s rained. :| I love the rain and all, but this much of it is incredibly annoying when it also happens to be muggy and the windows have to be closed. This is the wettest summer I’ve ever had.

Squilly Wonka

I spent a lot of time watching Spongebob Squarepants today, and I am not at all ashamed to say that I enjoy that show to no end. Admittedly, there aren’t many TV shows I’m willing to sit down and watch (like the horror industry, TV sucks), but I love Spongebob so much that I visit Nickelodeon’s slow, JavaScript riddled, pitiful-excuse-for-an-official-website just to see when Spongebob will be on. This way I can go in my room, watch it and laugh at it while Chip chews on his cage and squeals loudly in an effort to receive attention that is simply not available while the annoying yellow sponge is on.

The characters are adorable. I love Squidward and Plankton. Even Patrick gets on my good side, though I often find myself wanting to throw rocks (or maybe dodge balls) at his head in a good attempt to get it working. I get the feeling Patrick has a deep, dark secret he’s hiding that just hasn’t been revealed yet, or maybe he forgot about it. If I had any idea as to why, I’d elaborate on it. Everything he does just seems all too convenient for an axe murderer persona!

Anyway. The reason I am writing is because I also saw the version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp in it yesterday and that movie has some sort of magical hold on me because it constantly inspires me to do things like simply no other movie has ever done. Combine it with Spongebob Squarepants and you get Squilly Wonka, the newest addition to my art gallery, and I present it with an indescribable feeling of amusement. Now, if only I could include the fifth child…

Horror Is Comedy

I’m a huge horror buff. I love sitting in front of a television for a few hours without any lights on and watching movies with spooky phenomena and serial killers. I love laying in bed all night and gasping at a twig when it snaps off a tree branch or when my guinea pig makes a noise that sounds unearthly. Yeah, I know it sounds lame, but it’s true. But the problem is that the crap the horror industry is churning out today is just hilarious. Most of it is so unbelievable that I just sit there snorting at the victims when they scream with their scrunched up faces before they inevitably trip and fall prey to whoever wants to murder them, and at the villains on their unstoppable killing sprees just because they didn’t have anything better to do. Even worse is when they’re unstoppable. That’s not scary, that’s just downright lame. Oh no, Michael Myers is getting up again?! What a complete and total surprise several movies later!
